until we meet again, dubai

When I was booking flights for my recent trip to India, I was lucky and found a cheap(ish) fare on Emirates that would give me a fourteen hour layover in Dubai. My plan was that I would visit the observation deck at the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world and photograph the Burj Al Arab, the only seven-star hotel in the world, in extremely short time I had.

Seemed simple enough, right? Well, not so much.

My flight was late in arriving. By the time I cleared customs and grabbed a taxi, the observation deck in the Burj Khalifa was just about to close for the evening. So much for that.

The next morning, I awoke early. I pulled back the curtains and saw a similar scene as I saw the night before - darkness. I had forgotten that it was January (the eighty degree temperatures through me off). After a quick Google search, I found that the sun wasn't going to rise for another hour. My plan to catch a taxi to Jumeirah Beach to see the world’s most luxurious hotel on the shores of the Persian Gulf was scrapped, as I had to get back to the airport by then.

So this was all I really got to see of Dubai.

Terrible view, right?

I was pretty bummed, sitting in the back of the taxi on the way to the airport, that I was not able to accomplish what I wanted to. Looking back, I’m pretty thankful that I at least had that stunning view from my hotel room. It’s just another reason for me to go back. I promise I will see more of you next time, Dubai.

For a stunning view like this, book a room at the Shangri-La Dubai.
