stone town, zanzibar

After seeing all of the animals on Tanzania's mainland, we hopped a ferry taking us from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city to the island of Zanzibar. After the quick two hour ride, we disembarked at the main port and walked to our hotel in Stone Town. 

Stone Town was the flourishing center of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century. The architecture reflects the influence of many different cultures that have passed through the island during this time. There is a unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian, European and of course African elements. The most famous element of these influences are the wooden carved doors found throughout the city.  

The heart of Stone Town mostly consists of a maze of narrow alleys lined by houses, shops, bazaars and mosques. It's easy to get lost but also pretty easy to find your way again since the city is relatively small.
